 I
have just completed a new watercolor of this beautifully restored buyboat
owned by the Deltaville Maritime Museum and Holly Point Nature Park in
Deltaville, Virginia. Inspired by the museum’s 4 1/2 year restoration
project and the dedication of the volunteers, I have been following the
progress over the last year. In planning the design of my painting I worked
from photographs I took from the water last August and met several times
with John England, head of the “Crocketeers”. A portion of the proceeds
from the sale of this original painting will be donated to the F. D.
Crockett Restoration Project.
I like to be very creative in my paintings so it was a challenge to stay
true to the restoration but also show a bit of the "artist".
I have painted the details of this beautiful boat in a colorful impressionist
landscape that includes the park's "pierwalk" in the background. It has been such a fun painting endeavor that I
know this will
be just the first in a series of Chesapeake Bay boats - I already have an
idea for the next "Crockett" painting!

Working with “purist” watercolor techniques (which means no white or black
paint) my goal is to capture on paper a memorable and creative
visual impression for the viewer. I sketch in my sketchbook making
notes for future paintings and take hundreds of photos that I use for
resource material.
Since my ideas come from many sources I like to have a “painting plan”. Although each painting is different, I begin with a compositional plan of lights and darks in a 2” x 3” value sketch in my sketchbook and proceed to a full-size drawing on my watercolor paper. Using both large and small brushes as well as a “pouring” technique, I add vibrant colors in layers of transparent glazes in a style I call
“impressionistic realism”.
If you look closely at my work, you can see “negative painting” in the osprey’s nest, light “poured” into the water
in "Jellies" and clear transparent “luminous color” in the
seascape paintings of the Florida Keys. Please come to one of the shows and stop by for an art chat.
